This is also on top of fainting/recall + sending out animations. This is exacerbated to an even greater degree if the move involves a stats change, status effect, or recoil damage. Usually the recoil and health drop animations occur at the same time, but the recoil animation may last longer than it takes for the health to drop the required amount which means you're sitting there for an extra second watching the pokemon stumble around. So instead of the standard Select Attack > Animation > Health Drops, you have Select Attack > Your Pokemon's Attack Animation > Their Pokemon's Recoil Animation. In 3D you have to show recoil or it looks weird. The major problem with the battle speed is the same problem that games like Stadium and Colosseum had were due entirely to their 3D gameplay as opposed to 2D.
